The other day I was training a client in the fitness center and I overheard something on T.V. during her set of split squats. It was so bad that after she finished her set I actually mentioned I would give her a quick nutrition lesson so we stopped for a minute and I walked her over to the screens. She enjoyed the break. First, I looked around to see if I was the only one watching the tube but no, there were many others.
Long story short, there was a “fitness professional” on T.V. (ABC or NBC can’t remember) talking about different types of oils. They had spread out on a table, peanut, walnut, safflower, olive, soybean, coconut, and canola oil. She (the professional) asked the host of the show, “What is the most artery clogging oil? Which one of these oils should you avoid that increases your risk of heart disease?
You know what the host said? She spoke out, “probably my favorite one, coconut oil because it tastes so good”. The “fitness professional” said, “You’re absolutely right! It’s full of saturated fat and puts you at a greater risk for many health problems”!
I then vertically jumped up about 55 inches. After that I stopped, looked around at everyone on their bike, elliptical or treadmill and yelled. “are you all hearing this?” They didn’t get it, so I just took my client back over and had a tangent moment with her.
Organic extra virgin coconut oil is a fantastic oil. First, it contains high levels of lauric acid and medium chain triglycerides. For those of you that don’t know, medium chain triglycerides are broken down very easily by saliva and gastric juices, and are rapidly digested and absorbed. Unlike other fats which are usually long chain triglycerides, they put very little strain on the digestive system and provide a quick source of energy just like carbohydrates. It is also a very heat-stable oil which makes it suitable for cooking at high temperatures. Another awesome benefit of this is that it takes an extremely long time to go rancid.
